IGNATIUS “DIMINISHED” BEXASHE MUSICIAN • COMPOSER • ARTS EDUCATOR Ignatius “Diminished” Bexashe is a South African musician, composer, and arts educator born in Kimberley, Northern Cape. With over a decade of dedication to music education and performance, Bexashe has become a vital force in preserving and promoting African musical heritage while nurturing the next generation of artists. EARLY CAREER AND EDUCATION Bexashe began his professional journey in 2009 with the Field Band Foundation, where he launched the field band program in Postmasburg before relocating to Kuruman in 2010. A graduate of the prestigious Field Band Academy, he has built his career on a foundation of both formal training and passionate commitment to community music education. His studies with the Royal School of Music further deepened his expertise, inspiring him to reintroduce African music in schools throughout the Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. MUSIC EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY WORK Since 2011, Bexashe has served as a brass tutor for the youth organisation Hands On, sharing his knowledge and passion with young musicians. His love for arts education led to his current role as head of music and facilitator at the Galeshewe Theatre Organisation creative arts project. Additionally, he works as a high and low brass teacher with the award-winning Amandla Dança Teatro ZA, contributing to the development of emerging talent across South Africa. PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS As a performer, Bexashe has graced stages at numerous prestigious venues and festivals. He was a member of the jazz band Sound Register, performing at renowned events including Diamonds and Dorings and the SA Jazz Festival. A career highlight came when he performed for the President of South Africa at the Presidential Gala Dinner. His work with Amandla Dança Teatro’s orchestra has been particularly celebrated. He contributed to productions at the National Arts Festival that earned Ovation Awards three consecutive times (2018, 2019, and 2022). Most recently, he was part of the team that received a Cradle Young Critics Award for Mwana Wa Mvula at the International Cradle of Creativity at the Market Theatre. AWARDS AND RECOGNITION Bexashe’s commitment to preserving African heritage has been recognised with a Golden Shield Heritage Award from the National Heritage Council. He also received a Best Production of the Year award at the Northern Cape Awards in 2021. He has performed at the Golden Shield Heritage Awards and, in partnership with Northern Cape Tourism, had the honour of performing for the family of legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane.
