Sonwabo Ntyinkala — Artist Biography Sonwabo Ntyinkala is an East London-born and bred South African artist whose musical journey began in 2008. Rooted in Gospel and Jazz Soul, Sonwabo is a versatile vocalist and performer whose artistry blends soulful expression, spiritual depth, and the rich musical traditions of South Africa. His career gained international recognition when he performed in the United Kingdom in 2008, appearing at the Newcastle World Music Festival with Amandla. During the same period, he performed at the iconic Wembley Stadium as part of the Show Racism the Red Card campaign, using music as a platform for unity and social change. Sonwabo has shared stages with some of the most respected names in music. Among his career highlights was the opportunity to open the stage for legendary South African pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim, an experience that became an important milestone in his musical journey. In 2010, Sonwabo returned to the United Kingdom to perform at the renowned Roundhouse, sharing the stage with the Cuban band Meta Meta. These international experiences helped shape his musical identity and broaden his exposure as a South African performer. Back home in South Africa, Sonwabo has performed at a number of prominent festivals and cultural events, including the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, where he performed at the Dakawa Jazz event, as well as the North Arts Festival, Mamela Jazz Festival, 2010 FIFA World Cup Opening celebrations, Splash Festival 2012, and the Summer Season Festival. Throughout his career, Sonwabo has remained committed to creating music that speaks to the human spirit. His sound is deeply influenced by Gospel, Jazz and Soul, while his performances reflect his passion for storytelling, faith, culture and the power of music to bring people together. In 2026, Sonwabo entered a new chapter in his musical journey with the release of a new project featuring three tracks, including “Ameni” and “Inceba.” The release marks a renewed commitment to his music and serves as a continuation of a journey that began almost two decades ago.
